Chapter 40

Venting

“DO YOU have any idea what you’ve just done?” Gen hisses, and it registers that she’s not scared, or at least not only scared. She’s also furious.

With me.

Again.

“You’re mad at me?” I growl back, then note the curious looks we’re getting from the tables to our left and right. The music has started back up, a rocking number by Pink straight off the playlist I had Gen give to the DJ, but it’s not enough to cover our argument and definitely not loud enough to cover where I think it’s going.

I catch her arm and walk her to the one corner not holding a temporary bar or a cake. A couple making out there catch one look at my face and decide to find a better place to swap spit. When I’ve got Gen as far from prying eyes as I can get and still remain in the room, I look down at her. “Seriously? Did you want me to let her walk all over us again? Tonight? Here?”

“She would have made the circuit through the room, seen your father wasn’t here, and left us alone. Instead….”

“Instead what? Look, Gen, she’s called the shots since she got me here. She’s used coercion, blackmail, and brute force. And I’ve let her, for my sake and yours. But showing up at the wedding and then here? That’s too much, too far.” My power rises, a fierce crackling sensation in my core unlike anything I’ve experienced before. I feel it. I know it’s the precursor to something bad, but I’m beyond trying to control it.

Genesis opens her mouth to speak, but I’m not done.

“From the moment all this magical shit came into my life, everything’s gone to hell. I’ve been possessed, attacked, snakebit, controlled. Fuck, I can’t even remember the last time I made a decision without someone from the Registry influencing my choice. Why? Because I’ve had no choice. Do this or I won’t heal you. Do that or we’ll punish the one person you love most in the world. The one person who’s supposed to understand me and support me. You once told me you and Chris thought I’d break months ago. Well, guess what? I’ve hit my breaking point. So the only question is, whose side are you on?” I’m shouting. I know I’m shouting. And people are staring. I don’t think they can make out my words, but they know something is very wrong.

Across the room, Chris and Cassie head in our direction.

“Flynn, I’m sor—” Genesis begins, but I’m done. I’m more than done. I’ve had it.

I’m next to an exit, and I push through it, slamming the opener bar so hard the door bangs against the exterior wall. Down an empty hall, through another door. I don’t know where I’m going, and I don’t give a flying fuck, so long as it’s away from anyone and everyone who has any connection to the National Psychic Registry.

When I come back to myself, I’m standing in the dead center
